Amazon as employer case study

Like in any other sector, competition is inevitable in any sector. Various organizations compete in the delivery of quality products and services. In order to achieve this, the organizations also tend to compete in the recruitment and retaining of the highly qualified workforce. In most cases, those with good working conditions end up attracting the best workforce (Tenney 56). Such a case is common with the private sector. In order to maintain high standards of quality delivery, the organizations also try to retain their employees using various means. These include paying them well and opening opportunities for promotion.

Globalization has made the world a global village. One has to choose where to live and work. The workers who are frustrated by the local employer, they can now work elsewhere. Most developing countries lack qualified workers. As a result, they tend to depend on foreign workers. In most cases, such workers are highly paid for their services. Whenever such opportunities arise, unsatisfied workforce gets attracted. That is what happens to most workers who are lowly paid and get mistreated in their counties. They decide to move to other countries where they can be compensated well (Sirota and Douglas 25). This is one of the most serious issues currently affecting big companies like amazon. Apart from seeking a good pay, the workers also choose to work in companies where conditions are favorable. For example, most workers go to work where there are enough workers. This saves them the issue of being overworked.

Overworked

According to Tenney (58), due to the acute shortage of the competent workers in the recent times, the workload in the many sectors has become huge. Most workers are assigned several duties and are usually expected to finish them in time. This leads to cases of being overworked. An overworked worker is less likely to deliver quality work. Getting assigned to too many responsibilities than one can bear is in most cases dangerous. It usually leads to job dissatisfaction. It makes the workers feel frustrated (Ton 134). The desire of every worker is to work where he or she can work for some hours and have time for rest. Working under such conditions boosts morale and it makes workers enjoy their duties. That is why well-staffed organizations are able to retain their best workers for a very long period of time. Such organizations tend to maintain high quality of the delivery of services.

No opportunities for learning and growth

Due to the huge workload in many sectors, most employees are denied the opportunity to learn and grow within the field. A good number of organizations and facilities do not allow their workers to have time for further education and other improvement. They instead require them to concentrate on their given duties and responsibilities. This discourages the workers. It makes them feel as if they are in the wrong profession (Ton 137). As a result, some have been forced to leave their professions for other sectors where they can freely get time for their improvement. Some organizations even decide not to acknowledge further educational achievements of their employees who use their own free time to study. Such a case is common whenever an opportunity for promotion arises. This further leads to the demoralization of the workers. It is difficult to expect such a workforce to deliver quality services.

Lack of motivation/promotion

It is unrealistic for an employer to expect his or her employees to be around if there are no new opportunities. Most employees give their best with the hope that their efforts will be recognized and rewarded. This is in most cases achieved through promotions. The promotions motivate the employees and they make them even work harder than before (Sirota and Douglas 28). However, the online sector rarely gives room for new exciting opportunities. Instead of rewarding hard work with some form of promotion, most sectors decide to reward experience. This trend needs to be stopped since it kills the morale of those workers who want to get to the top on merit. It makes them to believe that even if they work hard and give their best, nobody is going to recognize them. This opens room for laxity among the workers. It leads to the delivery of services that are not of high standard.

Payment

Throughout the world, the salaries of most workers are relatively low. Nowadays, most students choose to pursue careers that are well paying. The online sector does not appear anywhere among such careers. This explains why online sector such as amazon is not attracting young practitioners. There is no young workforce to replace the aged workers who are on their way to retirement. Even the young workers in online sector are not satisfied. Some of them opt to move to other sectors where they can earn a lot of money. Those in the public sector also decide to join the private sector for the same reason. This trend worries a lot since the online business keeps on expanding, and yet there are no talented workers who can help to take it to the other level (Tenney 56). In any profession, most workers prefer working in a safe environment. As a result, they tend to avoid regions that are associated with conflict. Such a case is common in places experiencing employee molestation. Such organizations tend to be less attractive to various employees since there is nobody who does not fear for his or her safety.

Turnover

High job turnover is not a new factor in the online business sectors of most countries in the world. Companies such as amazon receives low employee turnover because of mistreating employees. This is mainly due to the low compensation benefits and poor working conditions associated with it. After moving from one organization to another in search of good terms, some employees choose to leave the profession. This discourages many young people who are interested in pursuing online jobs. Unless something is done to curb the turnover, amazon will continue facing a challenge. It will be difficult for it to attract and retain the best talents that can help it to achieve its goals. At the end of the day, this will affect the delivery of the services. Under such circumstances, it may be difficult for the people to be assured of the services of high quality.

Shortage

Shortage of the workforces is a critical issue that most companies around the world face. Students are no longer interested in pursuing careers in the online sector. Many of them argue that such jobs do not provide attractive salaries and other benefits (Tenney 59). This explains why there are decreasing enrollments in various online programs and courses. Most young people are now looking for careers that provide them with exciting opportunities. Unfortunately, the online sector is not the right choice for a good number of them. The low number of trained and qualified online practitioners has led to a serious shortage of the workforce. Most online facilities do not have enough workers. To make the matters worse, it has become difficult for the organizations to retain the best workforce. Highly qualified online practitioners tend to move out at any time. They get attracted to workplaces where working conditions seem to be favorable.

Getting the right employees is a serious issue in some companies. Such a case is common in the developing countries where there are few qualified professionals. In order for the companies to provide quality services to their people, it becomes necessary for them to outsource workers from other countries. For them to get the right and highly qualified workers, they have to part with a lot of money. If the money is not there, it means that the companies will not get the right workforce. In order to avoid this, some companies are making an effort to train their own workers. They send employees to foreign countries in order for them to get the right skills. Even in such cases, the trained workers come back to demand high and other good working conditions (Tenney 61). This issue further complicates the situation.

Conclusion

High job turnover is not a new factor in the online sectors. This is mainly due to the low compensation benefits and poor working conditions associated with it. After moving from one organization to another in search of good terms, some employees choose to leave the profession. This discourages many young people who are interested in pursuing online jobs. Unless something is done to curb the turnover, the online sector will continue facing a challenge. It will be difficult for it to attract and retain the best talents that can help it to achieve its goals. At the end of the day, this will affect the delivery of the services. Under such circumstances, it may be difficult for the people to be assured of the services of high quality.
