Written Communication Rubric
Written communication rubric guides on how a student is supposed to attend to the assignment depending on the understanding of the written communication course. When writing the assignment, the rubric gives the criteria to be used based on the understanding of how one is supposed to structure the paper. For instance, the ability to have a thesis and unifying ideas enables one to write a good paper. Topic sentences identifying the logical relationship with the thesis as well as supporting ideas makes a good assignment (Butterfield 28). The rubric also shows how one is supposed to develop content using appropriate, relevant and compelling evidence while all claims have to be explained comprehensively.
Leaning about written communication has played a key role in enhancing my writing style and skills. I had a notion that writing is all about answering the question given without any kind of format. However, in order to communicate effectively, I learned that simple things like sentence style and structure may end up not communicating effectively and can actually lead to misinformation. Through the learning, I have understood that sentence style and vocabulary communicates voice and engaged awareness of audience and purpose (29). Although there was I time I thought that written communication is effective by just stating things the way they have been asked, I have come to learn that just like in verbal communication, written communication has to go beyond answering the question. There must be supportive ideas which have to be backed up by evidence.
Effective written communication should avoid issues like typo errors, spelling mistakes, punctuations, sentence structure, and citation format. A simple emission of a comma can make a sentence loose meaning and the intended purpose is lost as one reads the work. The learning has played an important role in discovering different styles of writing that improves the message and the purpose intended. Plagiarism has been a contentious issue in written communication because it involves using other people’s work without properly acknowledging them in the work (30). In this regard, I have learned that it is crucial to cite other people’s work whenever writing any piece of work in order to evaluate the understanding of research work and broad ways of using the work to write good pieces of work. Citing other authors’ work is one of the ways of showing whether one has the knowledge about the subject matter being written about. Plagiarizing other people’s work is indicating that the writer does not have a clear understanding of the issue at hand and that is why they copy from other people.
Intercultural Knowledge and Competence Value Rubric
Intercultural knowledge and competence assignment acquaints students about the insights of cultural rules and biases and how experiences have shaped the rules as well as to identify ways of identifying and responding to cultural biases. The rubric criteria are indispensable in regards to directing students on how they should approach the issue of intercultural knowledge when attending to the assignment. Having studied the issue of intercultural knowledge in the course, the rubric assists me in developing the assignment that adheres to the requirements and instructions given.
Intercultural knowledge has opened up my mind of how one should view the culture of other people in relation to their history, politics, values, communication styles as well as the beliefs and practices. Having interacted with different people from different cultures in the classroom has been a good experience to solidify the classwork. As we held discussions with my fellow students, I came to understand that people from different cultures use and understand nonverbal communication differently (Maimone 37). For instance, greeting in the United States can be done by a way of shaking hands to any person but this is different when it comes to Arabic greetings because people of the opposite gender are not supposed to shake hands. When interacting with people from a different culture, it is important to understand their feelings and be supportive of them and their feelings. When one has this idea, it becomes easy to interact and learn from other people both at social and formal or professional perspectives.
The learning of intercultural knowledge broadened my view of how people should value other people’s culture and not judge their actions when one does not have a full idea of what the actions mean in that culture. For instance, nodding head when one is asked a question may mean being rude in some cultures but may be a sign of respect in other cultures. If one gets in a discussion with people from such two different cultures, there could be misunderstandings that can end up ruining the relationship. In this regard, I have been able to learn such things as I have been interacting with people from other cultures. In fact, understanding intercultural knowledge enlightened me about how one is supposed to easily assimilate another culture without facing challenges of learning a new culture (Arslan and Georgeta 8). For instance, I learned that the most important way of learning other cultures is by a way of first understanding them.
